The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER) decided to launch a challenge addressed to young artists and more. The way in which today’s youth think about the totalitarian period is important not only because it reveals the degree of knowing and understanding a certain period that still affects the Romanian society, but also informs on what we can improve.
If so far we have only organized graphic art or essay contests addressed to pupils, we wanted to provide more young people with an opportunity to express their view on communism. And a poster is an efficient way as it brings together two important elements: image and message.
The purpose of the contest is to fuel the youth’s interest in Romania’s recent history and to determine them to reflect on the totalitarian and repressive nature of the communist regime in Romania.
The poster contest is addressed to young artists and art enthusiasts from all fields aged 18-30. Works can be sent by June 6, postal date. The jury evaluating the works will be comprised of four artists and an IICCMER representative.
The best posters will be reunited in an exhibition to be launched this autumn in Bucharest and then displayed in Cluj-Napoca and other locations. The contest is part of the project One past, several images which will govern all ulterior manifestations.
Thus, we welcome the youth to leave their mark on communism.
