Bucharest/ Timişoara/ Prague, July 4, 2017. On Monday, July 3, 2017, the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER), the Timişoara Society and the Platfom for European Memory and Conscience have signed an Agreement on Cooperation in order to expand research in the area of killings of civilians on the border during the Communist regime in Romania.
The activities will concentrate on the cases of human rights infringement and on the abuses committed by representatives of the totalitarian system against those civilian persons that tried to flee the country.
About the Partners
The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and The Memory of the Romanian Exile (IICCMER) is a governmental structure established in 2005 and under the coordination of the Prime Minister. Its role consists, first of all, in scientifically managing and analysing the totalitarian period and its consequences. Secondly, the IICCMER supports the creation and implementation of educational tools to a memorial end, thus contributing to the articulation of the context in which the fundamental values and rights to be captured by our post-totalitarian society. Last but not least, IICCMER aims to collect, archive and publish documents relating to the memory of the Romanian exile. The Timişoara Society was founded during the first month after the Revolution by a group of intellectuals from Timişoara who directly took part in the events of December 1989. The organizations advocates for democracy, truth, human rights and the creation of the Romanian civil society. Its most important contribution is the Proclamation of Timişoara.
The Platform for European Memory and Conscience was founded in Prague on October 14, 2011 and is the result of the collaboration between 55 governmental and nongovernmental institutions from 19 countries of Europe and North America as of today, which aim to study the totalitarian past and honour the victims of the repressive regimes in Europe. Its objective is to promote cooperation between research institutes, archives, museums and other public and private organizations dealing with the history and memory of the Nazi, Fascist and Communist regimes and ideologies. The Platform plays a fundamental part in strengthening democracy by confronting the historical experience of radical evil in the states affected by totalitarianism in the 20th century. The Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and The Memory of the Romanian Exile is a member ever since its establishment.
