Legal Settlement of Communist Crimes Conference

Prague/Brussels, 17 May, 2012.  The Platform of European Memory and Conscience organized an international conference “Legal Settlement of Communist Crimes“ which will be held on 5 June, 2012 in the European Parliament in Brussels. Raising the issue of justice for the most serious crimes committed by the Communist dictatorships in Central and Eastern Europe from the national to a European level, the Platform of European Memory and Conscience convened the international conference under the auspices of a number of prominent Members of the European Parliament including former Presidents of the Parliament Mr Hans-GertPöttering and Mr Jerzy Buzek. In the interval 3-4 May 2011, the European Commission organised, in Bruxelles and Mechelen, the International Conference Network Meeting with Organisations Active in the Field of Memory and Remembrance. The purpose of the Conference was to create and consolidate a network of active European organisations in the field of the memory of Nazi and communist crimes and to debate sensitive issues related to the approaching of the two totalitarianisms of the 20th century. During the Public Hearing “What do Young Europeans Know about Totalitarianisms?” organized at the European Parliament on 29th of March  2011, the working group on the Platform of European Memory and Conscience, adopted the following document concerning the education on human rights through the study of the recent past. The International Conference “Crimes of the Communist Regimes”

In the interval 24-26 February 2010, the International Conference Crimes of the Communist Regimes took place in Prague (The Czech Republic). The event was organised by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and  partner institutions from the working group on the Platform of European Memory and Conscience. The Conference aimed at presenting an overview of the crimes committed by the communist regimes behind the Iron Curtain, evaluating them from a legal point of view and searching for possible solutions to the situation today. Prague, 6-7 October 2009 The Conference focused on the legacy of the non-democratic past of Central European countries.
